I look around and all I can see is the living-room floor covered in overflowing unzipped suitcases. It is a typical summer night in Madrid: hot and noisy. I reach to turn on the fan I borrowed from my mother and realize that I had already returned it. I lean on the dining-room table trying to make sense of all the documents and electronic gadgets I need to bring on the plane. The e-ticket printout, sticking out of my passport, reminds me that for this flight we don’t need four seats but only three. My wife has been stranded for weeks in NYC trying to get her visa approved unsuccessfully. I got our children’s and mine very quickly in Madrid. Perhaps it is just easier to get your visa if you are from Spain as opposed to the U.S., but this little advantage does not offer much consolation to the reality of having to move to Saudi by myself with two children, ages 3 and 5. Why did the Saudi chapter of our lives have to start this way?
It is late and the car service is coming to pick us up early in the morning. I feel so unsettled that I cannot get to sleep. Did I pack everything? What am I forgetting? Will I be able to carry everything while keeping the children safe? Will I have to pay excess baggage? Will I be able to get some sleep to be ready for a very long day – two flights — tomorrow?
The alarm clock does not need to work hard to wake me up from a very light sleep. I feel more nervous than exhausted. My mother and sister come with us to the airport to say goodbye. Hugs. Kisses. Tears. The line at security starts to move and we have to advance. A short lady with a uniform and a hat moves her hand to indicate our place in the line. That marks the end of a strange summer in Madrid in which my mother and my sister did all they could to fill the absence of Allison. Their worried faces soon disappear in the crowd of the busy airport.
We are finally on our own. As we board the plane I take out two lollipops for the boys, and trying to sound excited I say: “we are going to Riyadh, our new home.”

You have such a deep soul and courage to explore the universe and overcome your fears. It’s simply inspirational reading between your lines and reazling how people are similar regardless of their differences. No matter where we come from and what our background is, we all have that small window to look through the world while we use the same window to keep hidden into our own world. That’s what I felt in your blog. Keep going, your life adds value to my life and helps me keep doing what I am already doing, following the passion.

Hola diego.
