2. Riyadh

بدت مضيفة الطائرة مشفقة على أب مسافر لوحده مع طفلين، فقامت بإحضار كتب تلوين و ألعاب ليلعب بها الأولاد و كانت مراعية ملبية لأي طلب من طلباتنا بابتسامة لطيفة. بعد أن بدأت تألفنا سألتني: ” لماذا أنتم مسافرون إلى الرياض؟”

فأجبتها ” سننتقل للعيش هناك”

… فرمقتني بنظرة المحكوم عليه بالموت! وهي النظرة نفسها التي اعتدتها منذ أن أعلنت خبر انتقالي للعيش في الرياض، فأضافت قائلة: “إنني حالما أصل هناك أنتظر اللحظة التي تقلع بها الطائرة مرة أخرى لأغادر ذلك المكان! على كل حال…حظاً موفقاً !”

كانت الرحلة أفضل مما توقعت. فقد كان هناك الكثير من المقاعدالفارغة في مؤخرة الطائرة فأخذ أولادي بالتحرك و التنقل بحرية من دون إزعاج أحد. لمحت على النافذة اليمنى من مقعدنا زوجين شابين، يرتدون قمصاناً ذات ألوان زاهية و بناطيل جينز، و قد كانوا نائمين معظم الرحلة. لكن ما إن حان موعد تقديم الوجبة المعهودة على الطائرة، التفت إلى ورائي لألاحظ أن الفتاة قد تغطت بالأسود تماماً! بعد ذلك أعلن الكابتن أن الطائرة قد أشرفت على الهبوطوأننا اقتربنا من محطتنا الأخيرة.

كان الوقت مساءً حينما وصلنا إلى الرياض، وكانت هناك طائرة أخرى قادمة من بنغلاديش وصلت في نفس وقت رحلتنا. و قف عشرات العمال في الصف الطويل مع بعض الأوربيين، و بدت على وجوه المنتظرين معالم التعب و القلق آملين الانتهاء من معاملات ختم جوازات السفر بأسرع وقت . تأملت وجوه الناس حولي واختلاف اشكالهم و ألوانهم و تساءلت عن مصير كل شخص منهم وتجربته  التي ستكون مختلفة عن تجربتنا في السعودية.

بدأت بلقاء بعض زملائي بينما كنا ننتظر في الصف. فقد رتب مديرنا مواعيد سفرنا سوياً- كلنا ما عدا إليسون ورتب أيضاً أن يأتي شخص و يصطحبنا من المطار. حالما وصلنا إلى شباك موظف الجوازات، سمعت صوتًا عالياً ينادي “مرحباً ! كيف حالك؟ ” فما كان ذلك إلا مدير مدرستنا الذي كان يقف في داخل منطقة الواصلين ويرحب بالقادمين الجدد بكل حماس. أجبرت نفسي على الابتسام على مضض.

قمنا باستلام أمتعتنا، و فتحت الأبواب الكهربائية المؤدية إلى صالة القدوم. ” مررررحباً !!!” كان الترحيب هذه المرة صادراً من موظفتين من مدرستنا أخذتا بالترحيب بنا بحرارة و وهن ممسكات بتلك الزينة التي تحملنها المشجعات عادة، وإلى جانبهن يقف بعض السائقين الباكستانيين ذوي ملامح جدية وصارمة.

نحن في الرياض !

The flight attendant seems to take pity on a father alone with his two children. She brings coloring books and small toys for the boys and attends to any of our requests with a warm smile. At some point she asks, “Why are you going to Riyadh?”

“We are moving there.”

She looks at us as if we have been sentenced to death. It is a look that has become familiar since we announced we were moving to Riyadh. “I only fly there and then I try to get out as soon as I can,” she adds. “Well… good luck.”

The flight is not as unpleasant as I had anticipated. There are plenty of empty seats in the back of the plane, and the kids have some extra space to move without bothering anyone. There is a young couple with window seats to our right. They are wearing jeans and colorful t-shirts and have slept for most of the flight. After they serve the meal, I look over my shoulder again and see the girl completely covered in black. The captain announces that the plane is starting to descend as we are approaching our final destination.

Touch down. Night time. Another plane from Bangladesh has arrived at the same time as ours, and dozens of workers stand in line along with a bunch of westerners. People look tired and anxious to get through customs. As I see the mosaic of skin colors, I wonder about the different experiences that we will all have in Saudi after getting our passports stamped at the counter.

I start meeting some of my colleagues while we wait in line. Our employer has flown us all together  — all except Allison — and has arranged to pick us up at the airport. Once we reach the counter, I hear a loud, “Hey, how are ya?” and I see our director inside immigration area, energetically greeting all the newcomers. I force myself to smile.

We collect our baggage, and the sliding doors open to the arrivals lounge. “Heeeellllo!!!” Two female employees welcome us by shaking cheerleader pom poms alongside several serious-looking Pakistani drivers. We are in Riyadh.
