” ماذا حدث بتأشيرتك ؟ ” و كأنني بتكراري لهذا السؤال سأُعُجل من وصولها الى هنا. إن الحصول على إجابة شافية ليس بالشئ السهل، لأن شبكة الإنترنت بطيئة جداً، ومحاولة إجراء محادثة عبر برنامج سكايب أصبحت تجربة مرهقة و محبطة.

أجابتني إليسون بعد ثلاثة محاولات مضنية  عبر سكايب “لا شئ بعد، على ما يبدو أن الشخص المسؤول عن إنهاء الأوراق في القنصلية السعودية في واشنطن العاصمة، في إجازة، و لا توجد أي طريقة لمعرفة التطورات. أخبرني مديرنا بأنه يتعين علي أن أسافر إلى هناك وأتحدث معهم شخصياً”.

أجبت إليسون شارحاً لها: “نعم، لقد ذكر لي ذلك، و أخبرني  أيضاً أنه يجب أن تتجنبي الحديث معهم بانفعال أو غضب أو إلحاح، ذلك الإسلوب لا يصلح مع السعوديون، لكن يجب أن تركزي على ذكر أن اطفالك بعيدون عن أمهم منذ عدة أشهر، فهم سيتفهمون ذلك اكثر لأنهم يقدرون العائلة تقديراً عظيماً”

الأطفال نائمون. أنوار المنزل مطفأة، نور برتقالي خافت يتسلل من بين ستائر المنزل إلى غرفة المعيشة من الأضواء الخارجية  للمجمع السكني .هدوء تام قطع سكينته صوت شجار قطط بالخارج. أطفأت حاسبي الآلي و توجهت إلى السرير لأنام و بدأ ذهني يمتلئ بخيالات جميلة رسمتها عن اللحظة التي ستصل بها إليسون أخيراً! لقد مضت ثلاثة أشهر تقريباً منذ آخر مرة رأيتها فيها، إلى أن تحولت إلى صورة مشوشة على شاشة جهازي ! هذا وناهيك عن وجباتنا العائلية التي أصبحت سلسة مملة مكونة من ثلاثة أطباق سهلة التحضير.

هذا بالإضافة إلى انني لا أعرف حقاً طريقة سهلة لأشرح بها لأولادي أن والدتهم بعيدةً عنهم بسبب تأخر الإجراءات الورقية ! قبل ان أغفو خطرت ببالي كلمة قد سمعتها مراراً و تكراراً منذ قدومنا إلى هنا:

” إن شاء الله”

بعد عدة أيام، كانت إليسون على متن طائرة من نيويورك إلى الرياض. انفتح باب منزلنا في الساعة الثالثة فجراً. و كأن شخصاً قد ضغط زر عجيباً لإعادة الحياة لنا بعد أن كانت متوقفة. أيقظتني لمستها الناعمة، توجهت بعد ذلك بهدوء إلى غرفة الأولاد الذين كانوا مستغرقين بالنوم، و طبعت قبلة على جبين كل واحد منهم. جلبت أمتعتها إلى داخل المنزل، و بينما كنت أغلق الباب، أدركنا أن مدينة الرياض أصبحت أخيراً وطننا.

What is happening with your visa?” I ask yet again as if I could speed up the process by asking. Getting an answer is not easy. The Internet connection is slow and having a Skype conversation has become a frustrating experience.

“Nothing yet. The person who is processing the paperwork at the Saudi cultural mission in Washington D.C. apparently went on vacation and there is no way to know anything else. Our employer said that I should travel to D.C. and talk with them in person,” Allison says after three failed attempts.

“Yes,” I reply. “He mentioned that. He also said you should not get angry or speak in a demanding way. That would not go well with Saudis. But you need to let them know that your children have been away from their mother for months. They value family and they will understand that,” I explain.

The kids are asleep. The house lights are off and a soft orange light from the compound lighting enters the villa through the living room through the curtains. A cat fight breaks the deep silence and as I turn off my laptop. My head gets filled with fantasies of Allison finally arriving. It has been almost three months since she became just a blurry image on Skype. Our family meals turned into a predictable rotation of three easily prepared dishes and I don’t really know how to explain my kids that their mother is away because of paperwork. A word that I have heard many times since we arrived comes to my mind as I fall asleep: inshallah.

A few days later, Allison is on a flight from New York to Riyadh. Our door opens at 3 a.m. and, as if someone had pressed the play button, our lives stop being on hold. Her gentle touch wakes me up. Silently she goes to the boys, who are deep asleep, and kisses them on their foreheads. I drag her luggage inside the house and as I close the door, we know that Riyadh has finally become our home.
