6. The walls وراء الأسوار

أصبح لقهوة الصباح مذاقاً لا مثيل له !

سطعت أشعة الشمس على غرفة المعيشة وأنارت إليسون منزلنا و حياتنا بقدومها، إن وجودها معنا مرة أخرى جعلني أدرك كم كنت مشتاقا لها؛ فقد بدت الأشهر الثلاث الماضية كالكابوس الذي صحوت منه لتوي !

استيقظ الأولاد من النوم، وامتلأت قلوبهم فرحاً برؤية والدتهم! ضممنا بَعضُنَا نحن الأربعة مشكلين عصبة صغيرة لا يمكن فصلها.

حان وقت المدرسة ! لكن قررنا عدم الذهاب، فاليوم هو يوم تعويض القبلات و الأحضان التي اشتقنا لها من ماما !

في عطلة الأسبوع، كان سالم الصغير لا يقوى على فراق أمه، و بات يلاحقها متتبعا خطواتها من مكان لآخر خشية أن تغيب عنه و لا يراها مرة أخرى!

بينما كنت أشرب قهوتي، نظرت عبر النافذة إلى أشجار النخيل التي كانت تحجب السور العالي المغطى بالأسلاك الشائكة و الذي يفصلنا عن العالم الخارجي. ذكرتني لبرهة بالسور الخشبي الذي يحيط حلبة مصارعي الثيران، وقد بُنيَ بهذه الطريقة ليحتموا خلفه من غضب الثيران الهائجة عند مصارعتها. إن من أهم صفات مصارعي الثيران هي الشجاعة، وفي حالتي فإن الشجاعة مهمة لإعطائي القدرة على ترك هذا المكان الآمن و مواجهة العالم الآخر بالطرف المقابل من السور. لكن لأكن صادقاً، أنه لأمر صعب أن أتخطى شعور الخوف وأنا محاطُ بالنقاط الأمنية، و لحراس المسلحين، والتفتيش اليومي للسيارات، فكل شئ يذكرني بالخطر الكامن وراء هذه الأسوار!

بعد أن احتسيت آخر قطرة من قهوتي اللذيذة قلت لزوجتي “دعينا نستكشف الرياض، فأنا قد أرجأت ذلك بانتظار قدومك، لكي نقوم بذلك سوياً”

تركنا الأسوار خلفنا و مضينا بالطريق، و بينما كنت أقود السيارة، تخيلت لوهلة أنني في داخل لعبة فيديو، فالقيادة هنا أشبه بذلك، بطريقة سيرها العجيبة ! أمسكت مقود القيادة بحزم، وانضممت لهذا الموكب الآلي الراقص من السيارات في شوارع الرياض. كانت إليسون مطمئنة كون الأولاد جالسين بأمان في مقاعد السيارة الخاصة بهم. لفت نظري شاحنة ممتلئة بقطيع من الماعز صادفناها بينما كنا في طريقنا !

و لك أن تتخيل صعوبة أن تحصل على الاتجهات الدقيقة لوجهة ما، مع كل أعمال الإنشاء و الحفريات في المدينة، فإن نظام الملاحة  ” جي بي إس” وقف عاجزاً عن ذلك.

بعد أن ضعت لأكثر من مرة و سألت أكثر من شخص ليرشدنا إلى الاتجاه الصحيح، كل من صادفته كان لا يتحدث إلا اللغة العربية، والتي لا نفهم منها أي كلمة، وصلنا أخيراً إلى ساحة الديرة.

صباح باكر، طقس جميل. أخذت نفساً عميقاً لأستنشق هواء المدينة، ولأشعر بأرض المدينة تحت قدميّ. قبل أن ننزل من السيارة، غطت إليسون شعرها الذي صففته في نيويورك قبيل قدومها، وحاولت أن تثبت الغطاء بصعوبة كي لا يسقط. كانت المحلات مغلقة، و قليل فقط كان يمشي في الشارع. إن هذه الساحة الواسعة الكبيرة، هي لنا فقط هذا الصباح. كان المسجد الكبير على يسارنا، بينما كانت قلعة المصمك العملاقة  أمامنا، يرفرف فوقها علم كبير. في تلك اللحظة قطعت وعداً على نفسي أن أتعرف على هذا المكان!

My morning coffee tastes better than ever. The sunlight fills up the living room and Allison’s presence illuminates the house. Having her back makes me realize I had missed her even more than I thought. Those three months without her start to seem like a bad dream. The boys wake up and the four of us form a tight and intense bundle as we wrap each other with our arms. It is time to get ready for school, but there will be no school today. It is time for hugs, for kisses, for healing, for mom.

The weekend comes. Little Salem cannot separate himself from his mom. He follows closely every single one of her moves. He fears she might disappear again. I look out the window; behind the palm trees I see the tall concrete wall with barbed wire that separates us from the outside world. It reminds me of the protective wooden fence that goes around the bullrings in my country, built so the bullfighters can hide behind them from a deadly, charging bull. Bravery is required from bullfighters, and bravery seems to be required to leave behind these concrete walls. Security checks, armed guards, and daily car inspections make it impossible to shake off the feeling of being in danger here.

“Let’s explore the city,” I propose after the last sip of my coffee. “I have been waiting until you got here to get out and actually see Riyadh.”And we leave the walls behind. The roads at times seem like a video game with cars making unbelievable moves. I hold the steering wheel firmly while I nervously join the unpredictable dance of the four-wheel machines. Allison is grateful the boys are in their carseats, looking outside, wide-eyed at a truck full of long-eared sheep. The GPS cannot keep current with the construction all over the city. After getting lost a couple of times and asking directions from people who only speak Arabic — which neither of us knows a word of – we finally arrive at Deera Square.

Early morning. Beautiful weather. I take a deep breath and feel the ground of downtown Riyadh under my feet. Before stepping out of the car, Allison covers her hair, recently styled in New York, for the first time. She fusses with the head scarf, which keeps falling off. Stores are closed and very few people are walking down the street. This big, open space is ours this morning. The Grand mosque is on our left. Masmak Fort rises magnificently in front of us, with its big flag waving gently in the wind. I promise myself that I will get to know this place.
