“My family asked me what I thought about Saudis,” says a colleague to me one day during lunch. “I said, ‘I don’t know, I haven’t really met any.” How can it be so hard to meet Saudis in Saudi Arabia? I ask myself. But I also have not met any Saudis yet, and you cannot know a place without knowing its people. How do I meet Saudis?
A common friend has put me in touch with Khalid. Despite his name, he is not from Saudi, not even Arab. He is Irish and has spent more than half of his life in the Kingdom. He must know some Saudis, and I heard he speaks perfect Arabic. We also have something in common: we both practice judo. He is going to take me to a local place where he used to go before his knee said enough. I am excited to meet someone who seems to know Riyadh well, since we have not had many chances yet to venture beyond our compound walls and meet locals.
“Hi, Diego!”, he says with a warm smile as he firmly shakes my hand when he comes to pick me up. “Nice to meet you. How are you doing?” He has a faded, almost imperceptible, Irish accent. He is heavy-built and his long reddish beard lies on the upper part of his white thobe. I am instantly intrigued by this combination of Irish blood, Saudi clothes, and unusually long facial hair. What brought this man here and made him stay for so many years? The sun is setting as we hit the road. The car ride is full of questions that he is happy to answer. The quick explanation to all of them can be summarized in one word: Islam.
It is already dark when we arrive at King Faisal bin Fahd Stadium. The sports complex attached to it holds impressive facilities for the practice of several martial arts. Khalid rolls down the window and says something in fluent Arabic to the security guard that grants us access to the facilities. I can see on the guard’s face that he is surprised that this red-bearded Irishman speaks his language. Once inside, Khalid excuses himself, drops his bag, and quickly goes to the prayer room. When he finishes, we walk together to the large open space inside the stadium where several martial arts are practiced, bright-colored tatami mats all around. We approach the judo area, and Khalid starts greeting all the other judokas in Arabic, shaking hands, and kissing them hello — one kiss on the right cheek, and three on the left. In my country, it’s one kiss on each cheek to greet friends and strangers hello — but only between a man and a woman, or two women. I am suddenly aware of how different and foreign I feel.
An Egyptian coach runs the training. He shouts his instructions in Arabic from time to time while holding a threatening wooden stick. I follow what everybody does without trying to look too disoriented. Despite having a black belt in judo, I feel a bit like a beginner. We run, we roll, we sweat, and we repeat judo moves again and again. I am out of breath, but I am thrilled to be out and surrounded by Saudis, even if it is just to be thrown to the ground. I try to talk to my training partners and realize that they don’t know English. I have met Saudis, but there is still a closed door between us. I need to learn Arabic.
